The Bench
It’s just a bench...but no, it’s not just any bench the bench sits there, but is it – just sitting? The bench waits for an old friend and his partner for they bring joy, calm and lovely conversation when they sit It’s just a bench...however it’s not home to the finch who sits on the back top rung, is it? The bench beams when they come old friend and partner, bringing quiet, and illumination when they sit And the people who walk by and say ‘Hello” They know the bench is special, the couple too All united in friendship and kindness Like people used to do...they still do (if you look) It’s not just a bench, it is a safe place to observe a kind place to rest and say, “Hello” Or “Evening”, or “Morning” and pass some time in, in the joy of being Ah, bench, you live in front of the library where you offer so much to so many And your dear friend and his partner are your partners in being a bench! They understand you are a respite, a place to sit and talk, to eat, to take a nap, to ponder, smile in wonder, hug your love, pet your dog, hold your child, see your friends.... You are magic, they are magic Aren’t we lucky?
