You Might Ask - Why Words, Janet? Why Poets? Why Sunshine?
With so much in the world focusing on darkness, sorrows, grievances – I looked through the years of poems and stories I’ve written -solely for me and my friends - and thought maybe they would bring peace, or a smile, laughter, maybe inspire empowerment, resilience and gratitude if they were shared, not languishing on the vine of my hard drive in my computer.
We need words of love and loving kindness, joy and ebullience to traverse this brief moment we have on this amazing home we call earth.
As a screenwriter and playwright, I always held poets in such high regard – they have a special, magical category all their own - so it is very humbly and with reverence for the great women and men who’ve come before, that I offer Words for the Weekend and Sunshine Saturdays.
My poems are written in response to things happening around us, things I see or read about, or nature, and then there are family and my circle of friends – without whom I would not be sitting here writing this introduction.
You may ask why “Words for the Weekend – Poems for POETS? And why publish Friday not Saturday?” Well, my lovely neighbor, Eleanor, (we live in Primrose Hill, London) loved a poem I wrote called “Tigress” and she told me how much her friends had loved it when she shared it with them. Her kind words and their response made me decide to set up a Substack site. When I told her I was doing the site and it would be poems for the weekend and that it would go up on Fridays she looked at me, in her wise Scots way, and said, “It’s poems for Poets!” Poets, I asked? Eleanor nodded, “Oh you wouldn’t know, you’re American! Over here POETS means; Piss Off Early Tomorrow’s Saturday! Knock off a little early on Friday and go out with your mates!!” I laughed and thought it was perfect.
So enjoy, Words for the Weekend; “Poems for POETS Fridays” and “Sunshine Saturdays – from Pendleton Poodle,” whose job it is to make the world a little kinder. Pen has stories, limericks and more…!
Give us a read and let us know how we can bring more to our word game!
